Bone beads have been made throughout the African continent including East, West, and even South Africa. Historically, bone beads may be made from any number of bone sources including ivory from different kinds of animal tusks or antlers. Other natural materials similar to bone used to make beads include horn, ostrich eggshells, marine and freshwater seashells such as clams, and also coral. Bone is unique among bead making materials due to both its strength and because it can be carved by hand and polished into many different shapes and sizes. Bone is also relatively lighter than similar size beads made from glass or metal.

One of the best-known varieties of bone beads is the Mudcloth Bone Batik from East Africa. Kenya in particular is a major producer of Batik Bone Beads. Wow! This strand of carved bone skull beads is super long! Break it into two strands or double it up to make a necklace. Individual beads measure 11mm long by 7mm diameter. With 108 beads this is a great value! These beads are made of carved cow bone. These beads are handmade and a few on each strand may show imperfections.
It was what I was looking for. I had a few of these from over 35 years ago that I wore even through my Naval service. I found the few that I had and decided I wanted more. These are good quality (except for 1 broken bead) and the actual color was darker than I wanted but overall they’ll do and it’ll be easier to spot my OG skull beads

Bone Skull
Thrilled to have these again. Love the double length, and contrast dark to medium beads. Favorite part is watching these fade and get lighter with age and wear. These are the best filler beads in my vintage bracelets and necklaces.
